Waterbirth

Women have used water to ease labor and facilitate birth for thousands of years. Emersion in a tub of warm water allows the woman to fully relax and be free from gravity's pull on her body.  As a result, her body is more likely to produce endorphins, her body's natural pain inhibitors, and less likely to secrete stress-related hormones which can raise the blood pressure, inhibit labor progress, and increase the perception of pain during labor. The calmness and ease of the mother who labors and gives birth in water is transferred to the child through an intricate sharing of hormones that is still in place soon after birth.  Babies who are born into water often do not cry or cry very little, and seem to have a peace about them that is carried on in life.

The benefits of waterbirth include:

  • more comfort for mom in labor
  • decreased need for analgesics and anesthesia
  • increased relaxation and ability to inward focus
  • gentler transition for baby
  • ease of changing birthing positions
  • may shorten length of labor
  • less blood loss
  • less vaginal tears
  • decreased interventions to mom or baby
  • baby is more likely to be "caught" by the mother, and less likely to be touched and interfered with by others
  • easier clean up after birth
